Advocacy

The focus of Connections AAA advocacy efforts is to educate seniors, their families, caregivers and elected officials about the needs of older adults, and to encourage seniors to advocate on their own behalf. For more information about how to volunteer or to make a request for a program, please call us toll free at 1.800.432.9209.

How You can put Advocacy in Action!

Advisory Councils

  • The Advisory Council serves as an information link between the Area Agency and the local counties.  Members represent each of our service areas and have an opportunity to advocate local concerns by giving input on the policies and direction of the agency. Members can also advocate with local, state and national officials on seniors' concerns.  By attending Advisory Council meetings and getting involved, members are informed and up-to-date on senior issues.
  • LifeLong Links Advisory Council serves as an information link between the Area Agency's LifeLong Links staff and the local counties. Members represent older Iowans, veterans, and people living with disabilities, especially in regards to their needs and concerns within our service area. Members, not only represent these target audiences, but assist in relaying information back to their communities regarding LifeLong Links mission to help people access home and community based options.

District Leaders

  • District leaders are volunteers who speak out - either in person, by phone or email. They convey messages of importance to legislators on the behalf of seniors and persons with disabilities who want to live independently. With the over 60 population being the fastest growing age group in Iowa, District Leaders are needed to react proactively to senior issues and concerns. Tools, information and training will be provided.

Volunteer Ombudsman Program (VOP)

  • Each long-term care facility has a committee comprised of community volunteers who work to improve conditions for people who live in facilities. Volunteers work at a facility talking with the residents to understand conditions at the facility from the residents' point of view, then work through facility staff to correct problems or implement suggestions for improvement. For more information on the VOP program, please call the Long Term Care Ombudsman at 800.532.3213.

Elder Abuse Prevention and Awareness
