3/23/20 (Sioux City) In response to the vulnerability of the senior population to Covid-19, Connections Area Agency on Aging is partnering with Pickerman’s Sandwich Shop. Pickerman’s will be donating sack lunches for residents of three senior apartment complexes in Sioux City. Sack lunches, which include a cold meat sandwich, chips, and a cookie, are being distributed on a rotating schedule to Fairmount Park, Riverside Gardens and Evergreen Terrace. Rick Motz, owner of Pickerman’s, is a commissioner for the State of Iowa Department on Aging and has been a long-time senior advocate. Commissioner Rick Motz reached out to Connections early this week with his offer, “I have been a longtime advocate for the health and well-being of our elderly friends and neighbors. I know how important nutrition is to senior independence, and I knew that I could be an agent for assistance here in Sioux City.”
“We are so grateful to have a partner like Rick Motz and Pickerman’s here in Sioux City. Rick’s leadership and commitment to aging Iowans is second to none, and we know that the donation of meals from Pickerman’s will be such a welcome treat for seniors who are socially distancing,” said Kelly Butts-Elston, Director of Connections Area Agency on Aging.
Some of the residents of these apartments are participants in Connections’ congregate meals or home delivered meals (Meals on Wheels.) Due to the COVID-19 virus, all Connections congregate meal sites are closed until the crisis has passed. These sack lunches will be a welcome substitution for congregate clients and a wonderful fresh nutrition addition to all current meal recipients who are receiving our home delivered meal packages.
