The Foster Grandparent Program
The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) sponsored by Connections AAA reaches into Pottawattamie, Mills, and Fremont Counties. It provides volunteers, aged 55 and older, with an opportunity to work with one-on-one with children in schools, head starts, and day care centers.
Our program is open to individuals ages 55 and over who can serve a minimum of 15 hours per week. There is no need for formal experience in tutoring or mentoring. Foster Grandparents receive pre-service and ongoing monthly training.
For their service, if they meet income requirements, the Foster Grandparent receives a tax-free hourly stipend. This stipend does not count as income toward any benefits that the volunteer currently receives. The program also provides transportation reimbursement, annual physicals and flu shots.
"Being able to help just one child understand what she reads is worth so
much more than all the money in the world. It helps the child feel good
about herself and builds her self-esteem so she will be able to face the
world with her head held high. It makes this grandma feel that it's
worthwhile." Sally McKnight- Former Foster Grandparent who served for 9 years
